A scramjet engine outperforms a ramjet engine by operating at hypersonic speeds and allowing supersonic combustion. As a result, it is known as a Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet).
An airplane driven by this type of propulsion travels faster than any other jet-powered aircraft currently in use. The ability of these planes to fly at hypersonic speeds is its most notable characteristic (more than Mach five).
They are typically utilized on missiles and airplanes, but due to their comparatively easy construction compared to rocket motors that can run at comparable speeds, they have also been explored for use as a motor for hypersonic vehicles.
The rising frequency of territorial conflicts is a crucial factor driving the growth of this industry. Territorial conflicts are diplomatic disputes between two or more sovereign governments or other entities over the possession or control of territory, which can grow to significant disagreements and even military confrontations, as seen throughout history.
The Global Scramjet Engine Market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
ISRO’s Scramjet Engine Technology Demonstrator has successfully flown. Satellites are now propelled into orbit by multi-staged satellite launch vehicles that can only be used once (expendable).
These launch vehicles contain oxidizer in addition to fuel for burning to generate thrust. Launch rockets designed for one-time usage are costly and inefficient since they can only deliver 2-4 percent of their lift-off mass to orbit. As a result, there is a worldwide effort to minimize the cost of launch.
The first experimental flight of ISRO’s Scramjet Engine toward the realization of an Air Breathing Propulsion System was successfully completed from Srihari Kota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR.
Some of the technological challenges faced by ISRO during the development of the Scramjet engine include the design and development of the Hypersonic engine air intake, the supersonic combustor, the development of materials that can withstand very high temperatures, computational tools to simulate hypersonic flow, ensuring engine performance and operability across a wide range of flight speeds, proper thermal management, and engine ground testing.
India is the fourth country to showcase Scramjet Engine flight testing.
