Senegal will launch services for all-electric buses.
Together with its partners Keolis and Fonsis, infrastructure investor Meridiam is putting into action a significant bus project in Africa. The concession agreement that has just been signed includes a total investment for running and maintaining a public transportation system in Dakar, the city of Senegal, that only uses electric buses.
Buses on BRT lines go in their own, structurally separate lanes, in contrast to some ordinary bus routes. At least 18.3 kilometres of BRT lanes are planned for Dakar, making the buses less prone to delays caused by traffic, even during rush hour.
Modern express buses, according to Meridiam, will shorten travel times and improve reliability of public transportation in addition to enhancing comfort and safety.Although the French investor claims “Meridiam signs the contract for the first electric bus in Africa in Dakar,” electric buses are already up and running in different parts of Africa – though indeed not yet on this scale.
