A camera is an optical device that can capture images. Most cameras can take 2D photos, while some advanced ones can produce 3D images. Most cameras are made up of sealed boxes (the camera body) with a small hole (the aperture) that allows light to flow through to capture an image on a light-sensitive surface (usually a digital sensor or photographic film).
Cameras use a variety of methods to manipulate how light falls on a light-sensitive surface. The aperture of a lens can be narrowed or broadened to focus the light entering the camera. A shutter mechanism controls how long the photosensitive surface is exposed to light.
The Global Specialty camera market accounted for $XX Billion in 2021 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
The evolution of the compact camera and its eventual demise as mass-market consumers migrated in droves to smartphones. Technically, the development of prosumers hasn’t been affected by these low-ticket items, but they have cost manufacturers a lot of money in restructuring costs (Nikon is a notable example), as sales and consequently output fell.
That mirrorless cameras have been successful. This was never set in stone, but there are numerous instances of technological advancements that have made cameras more affordable or better in terms of production costs. While it has taken years for these advancements to finally surpass DSLRs, mirrorless arguably achieves both.
Although Nikon (D90) and Canon (5D Mk2) were early adopters, it may be said that Panasonic and Sony have advanced the development of video in the interim.
Additionally, computational photography has a strong connection to the development of smartphones. Although we have traditionally used computers to process a number of photographs, it was the smartphone that really brought camera and processing together to the point where they are now seamlessly interwoven.
Although there have been some limited and specialized attempts on this front from camera manufacturers, such as in-camera HDRs and panoramas.
