    A BOOST FOR SPACE COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES.In accordance with a deal with the German Ministry of Defense, Astrium will provide COMSATBw-2 and SES ASTRA 3B for the Luxembourg-based operator SES ASTRA, respectively.

    Using a Eurostar E 3000 platform, Astrium constructed the ASTRA 3B satellite, which will launch weighing about 5,500 kg.

     

    ASTRA 3B will be located at 23.5 degrees East and equipped with 60 active Ku-band transponders and four active Ka-band transponders. It boasts a design life and will supply high-power broadcast services throughout all of Europe.

     

    Two military communications satellites, COMSATBw-1 and COMSATBw-2, built by Astrium and supplied to the German Ministry of Defense as part of a satellite communications system, were launched by Arianespace. Arianespace launched COMSATBw-1, the first satellite in this family, into orbit. The 34th military payload launched by Arianespace will be COMSATBw-2.
