INTRODUCTION
Enemy aircraft or missiles with a surface-to-air missile (SAM), radar, or infrared guided missile fired from a ground position. It also goes by the name Starstreak HVM (High Velocity Missile).
The missile accelerates past Mach 4 after launch, making it the world’s fastest short-range surface-to-air missile. It then fires three submunitions equipped with laser beams to increase the chance of hitting the target.
A missile that can be fired from a military aircraft at both land-based and maritime targets is known as an air-to-surface missile (ASM) or air-to-ground missile (AGM). Additionally, guided glide bombs without propulsion are not called missiles.
The two most popular propulsion methods for air-to-surface missiles are slower, longer-range jet engines and rocket motors, which typically have shorter range.
Some ramjet-powered air-to-surface missiles of Soviet design have a considerable range and rapid speed. Typically, laser guidance, infrared guidance, optical guidance, or satellite guidance signals are used to guide air-to-surface missiles.
The kind of target determines the kind of guidance. For instance, ships may be located using passive radar or active radar homing, which is less efficient against numerous, small, swiftly moving land objects.
GLOBAL AIR-TO-SURFACE MISSILE MARKET SIZE AND FORECAST
The global Air-to-Surface Missile market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH
Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy successfully conducted flight tests of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from an Indian Naval Ship at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
The VL-SRSAM is a ship-borne missile system designed to eliminate close-range aerial threats, such as targets that skim the surface of the water.
A high-speed aerial target resembling an aircraft was used for the system’s launch, and it was successfully engaged. Several monitoring devices set by ITR, Chandipur, were used to keep an eye on the vehicle’s flight route and health indicators. The test launch was seen by key DRDO and Indian Navy officers.
The Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral praised the Indian Navy and DRDO for the VL-successful SRSAM’s flight test and stated that the development of this homegrown missile system will improve the Indian Navy’s defensive capabilities.
The Secretary of Defence R&D and the Chairman of DRDO praised the teams for the successful flight test. According to him, the test validated the installation of indigenous weapons of Indian Navy ships. He continued by saying that it will strengthen the Indian Navy and take another step toward Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s goal of a “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
