A titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel with better resistance to intergranular corrosion is 321 stainless steel (UNS S32100). With the addition of titanium, this grade is stable against the formation of chromium carbide at high temperatures up to 1500°F (815°C).
The titanium carbide precipitates within the grain as opposed to developing at the grain boundaries because titanium has a greater affinity for carbon than chromium. Even though its annealed corrosion resistance is comparable to that of 304 and 304L, it has better creep and stress rupture characteristics.
