According to the 5G NGFI capacity criteria, not all air interface solutions can fully centralise baseband processing. Large antenna arrays and bandwidth in the GHz range allow for higher transport data rates than are currently or soon to be supported by practical transport technology.

 

Future 5G networks should therefore take into account functional splits, where the transfer rates are proportional to the actual utilisation.
