True or absolute angular position is measured via absolute encoders. Comparatively, incremental encoders track changes in angular position. What happens when an encoder is powered on determines whether it is an absolute or incremental encoder. It is incremental if the encoder must move or undergo a “wake and shake” procedure in order to identify its position. It is absolute if it outputs its actual position without moving.
Absolute encoders often produce either an analogue signal like 0-10V or 4-20mA or a digital data stream like serial synchronous interface (SSI).
