Electric tractors power themselves through batteries. Depending upon the battery capacity, these electric tractors can operate for 4-8 hours.
As the batteries are heavy these tractors have better traction than their counterparts which are diesel powered tractors. Apart from this, electric tractors perform better than diesel powered engines, that too without making any noise.
Unlike electric cars, there are less obstacles in replacing the diesel powered engines completely with electric tractors. As the tractors never leave the farm land, the electric chargers can be placed within the farms. These chargers can also be solar powered.

A multinational team of Volkswagen experts has taken into account traditional African living circumstances, climate change, and population increase to design an e-tractor research and an accompanying ecosystem.
The goal is to make it possible for innovative and enduring forms of mobility and micro-agriculture in rural Africa. According to Volkswagen South Africa, “The idea of the e-tractor might completely transform the lives of many people in rural areas of Africa.”
Volkswagen Group Innovation and Volkswagen Group South Africa worked together to create the project.
Because farmers virtually ever employ machinery, harvest production is low in many rural areas of Africa. This is caused by access to fuels rather than necessarily the availability of technological equipment. Sunlight, however, is a sufficient resource in these areas.
The plan calls for distributed solar panels that can act as antennas for mobile internet, shade structures, and chargers for the tractor’s and other machines’ batteries.
