In tactical aircraft pods, the Ram Air Chiller is a patented integrated air cycle machine/heat exchanger system that provides liquid cooling of sensors and electronics, particularly in situations where there is very little power available for the cooling.
There are two standard sizes available: a 14" diameter unit for large, centered pods and a 7" diameter unit for pods installed on wingtips or pylons. The small unit's cooling capacity is 3.5 KW, while the large unit's cooling capability is 10 KW at a maximum coolant supply temperature of 60oC.
