    One-step high temperature polycondensation was used to create a number of semi-alicyclic polyimides (PIs) using MTDA and different aromatic diamines.


    To serve as a point of comparison, a different set of PIs (PI-Ia-PI-Id) were created using the same diamines and the similar dianhydride, 3,4-dicarboxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthalene succinic dianhydride (TDA, I).


    By reducing the intramolecular or intermolecular contacts of the polymer chains, the asymmetrical molecular structure of MTDA gave the resulting PIs good solubilities in common solvents and high optical transparencies in the ultraviolet and visible light areas.



    Glass transition temperatures for the flexible and durable PI films were in the range of 204–271 °C, and they displayed good thermal stability up to 400 °C.


    With transmittances >80% at 400 nm, a cut-off wavelength of 300 nm, and a refractive index of 1.54, the PI films demonstrated good optical transparency.
