Here, elemental carbon from consortia of anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) and sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which together perform the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), is found and characterized. AOM consortia ANME-1a/HotSeep-1 and ANME-2a/c/Seep-SRB both create a black substance with traits resembling amorphous carbon and disordered graphite.
