     A type of excavator called an amphibious excavator, pontoon excavator, or floating excavator can dredge on soft terrain like swamps, wet land, and shallow water while floating. Compared to traditional barge-mounted dredgers, amphibious excavators are better suited for removing silty clay, clearing silted trenches, working in swamps, and working in shallow water.

    There are five separate, watertight compartments with holes for maintenance in each pontoon. For use in rocky terrain, the pontoons have reinforced bottoms. An excavator engine and main hydraulic pumps with motors that move are what drive the pontoon tracks.
