    AUSTRALIA AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLE MARKET

    INTRODUCTION

AGVs are widely recognised as one of the most adaptable solutions for in-plant transfers. Despite all the innovative benefits of this technology, there remains one significant drawback: the idea of energy supply. The major benefit of autonomous navigation on the manufacturing floor over track mounted systems is too constrained by traditional power transmission technology.

The use of on-board energy storages, such as batteries or super-capacitors, is a common solution to this problem. These energy reserves require regular recharges. Charging can be done either inside the AGV or outside the AGV using a swapping and charging station for energy storage.

    LATEST DEVELOPMENT

Expanding its AGV fleet for site-wide operations is Lactalis Australia. At its Lidcombe warehouse in New South Wales, dairy manufacturer Lactalis Australia has made an investment in a second automated guided vehicle (AGV) for its fleet. The addition of a fifth AGV will allow Lactalis to increase the automation of the warehouse in other areas.

Each of the five AGV units will be able to operate in a different region of the warehouse to fetch goods that are ready for delivery while still collaborating well as a group. This switch to site-wide automated operations with AGVs has greatly streamlined Lactalis’ operations.

Lactalis is committed to promoting Australia as a high-quality producer for the Asia Pacific region and investing in and strengthening the Australian dairy industry.

AGVs in the fleet work to retrieve pallets from a production-related inbound conveyer system, feed the pallets into an order buffer, and then release the pallets at a declining angle onto pallet live storage racking.

AGVs can operate around-the-clock in both small and big spaces, controlling congested traffic at up to 1.7 metres per second. At the Lidcombe plant, the AGVs are in charge of moving milk pallets, and they can lift cargo weighing up to 1.2 tonnes six metres in the air.

AGVs are a cutting-edge automated solution that provide increased precision and safety around people and other barriers thanks to sensors and laser scanners.
