The Austrian Post Office is looking into reusable and sustainable packaging options for sending packages as part of the “Grüne Verpackung” trial project. The dm pharmacy chain and other merchants are taking part.
The Austrian Post Office has introduced the “Green Packaging” initiative, a pilot programme for reusable and sustainable shipping packaging for online retail, in collaboration with the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences and five retail businesses. It is anticipated that the recyclable packaging will “survive” up to 100 transportation cycles.
Selected products from dm, Intersport, Tchibo, and Thalia will begin shipping in reusable packaging as part of the six-month packaging trial immediately; Interspar weinwelt will follow later in the spring. They can also return packaging from dm, Thalia, and Tchibo at their respective branch offices. The packaging is cleaned and resent after being returned.
The Austrian Post Office reports that the test uses four containers that, as compared to standard disposable cartons, achieve the ecological break-even threshold after a few cycles and are manufactured from recyclable PET or renewable raw materials.
