    AUTOMOTIVE DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL MARKET

    INTRODUCTION

Flywheels are used in automotive engines to absorb and distribute the power produced during power stroke uniformly across other three strokes in a four stroke engine. The prime reason behind usage of dual mass flywheel instead of conventional flywheel is smoother clutch operation, improved gear shifts and reduction in vibration throughout the vehicle.

AUTOMATIC DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL MARKET DYNAMICS

In Europe, due to higher fitment of 12V Start-stop system since early 2010s, Diesel-manual transmission cars mostly have dual mass flywheels to improve engine refinement at start, stop and low speeds.

OEMs follow different strategies to reduce NVH in their vehicles by further customizing dual mass flywheel.

For example, In 2008, JLR equipped the new Freelander with a new Polyetheretherketone friction control plate to withstand 7X the pressure of the outgoing plate, for higher refinement under even greater start and stop demands.

In 2009, Hyundai-Kia engineers used a single-mass flywheel and one clutch—rather than dual-mass flywheel and two clutches—to reduce cost, and weight.

In 2012, when BMW launched 2012 X3 with N20 engine, it added a  a centrifugal pendulum absorber integrated in the dual-mass flywheel to further reduce irregular running at low engine rpm. It was further carried on to 3 Series in 2015 i.e. the 6-speed manual transmission on 340i model.

In 2014, FCA`s RAM Premaster van debuted in North American market with a 3.0L I-4 Diesel engine also featuring dual mass flywheel

Also in 2014, Mercedes launched the all new C Class with a special dual-mass flywheel to better compensate for the imbalances of a diesel engine and doing away with  a balancer shaft. The Diesel engine called OM 626 was product of the strategic cooperation with Renault and assembled in part in Bremen.

In 2015, Audi launched the Millerites TFSI engine on A4 featuring  a centrifugal pendulum-type absorber on the dual-mass flywheel allowing very low idling speeds.

AUTOMATIC DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL MARKET SIZE AND FORECAST

The global automotive dual mass flywheel market size is closely related with automotive production. As auto production peaked in 2017 and has been in decline mode ever since, especially after COVID-19, the market size for dual mass flywheel has declined linearly.

TRENDS IN AUTOMOTIVE DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL

Enhanced Driving Comfort: DMFs are renowned for their capacity to lessen drivetrain tremors and offer slicker operation during gear changes. This results in increased driving comfort for the vehicle’s occupants, making it a feature that many drivers find appealing.

DMFs may help manual transmission vehicles operate more efficiently in terms of fuel. DMFs aid in engine performance optimization and cut down on energy losses by minimizing drivetrain vibrations and smoothing out power delivery. Better fuel economy could follow from this, which is consistent with the industry’s goal on increasing efficiency and lowering emissions.

Compatibility with Start-Stop Systems: Modern vehicles increasingly use start-stop systems, which automatically turn off the engine when the car is stopped and resume it when the driver wishes to proceed.

DMFs are a good choice for start-stop systems because they improve the system’s performance and durability by absorbing the vibrations and stress loads brought on by repeated engine on/off cycles.

Integration with Advanced Transmission Technologies: Dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), for example, can be integrated with DMFs. Flywheel designs for DCTs must be able to bear larger torque loads and have smoother engagement. These requirements can be met, and DMFs can enhance the overall performance of vehicles using DCTs.

Compact and Lightweight Designs: Producers are constantly attempting to create DMFs that are smaller and lighter. Performance isn’t sacrificed in order to reduce weight and size thanks to the use of cutting-edge materials and optimal designs. This pattern fits with the industry’s emphasis on light weighting to enhance overall vehicle performance and fuel economy.

Applications for Electric Vehicles: While DMFs are typically connected to cars with manual gearboxes, they can also be used in hybrid and electric vehicles. DMFs can be combined with internal combustion engines in hybrid cars to supply power more smoothly and minimize NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness). DMFs can be used in hybrid powertrains, which pair an electric motor with a tiny internal combustion engine, or they can be incorporated into range extenders for electric vehicles.

In general, dual mass flywheels are popular because of their capacity to increase driving comfort, increase fuel efficiency, and satisfy the needs of advanced transmission technologies. The creation and use of DMFs are anticipated to be in line with the automotive industry’s emphasis on sustainability, efficiency, and performance as it continues to expand.

AUTOMATIC DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL MARKET COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Germany based ZF and Schaeffler(including LuK) are among the biggest suppliers of dual mass flywheel. ZF started making Dual mass flywheel in 1999 and has undertaken numerous plant expansions ever since. ZF`s initial market  for dual mass flywheel was limited to Diesel engines but in mid 2000s` it further expanded to higher segment gasoline engines as well.
