Last Updated:  Apr 25, 2025 | Study Period: 2024-2030

BIO-BASED GLYCERIN MARKET

INTRODUCTION

Glycerin is a straightforward polymer.Glycerin, which is also known as glycerol and glycerine, is a non-toxic, non-allergenic liquid that is colourless, odourless, thick, and hygroscopic.

The molecular formula of this solvent is C3H8O3. It is sometimes referred to as glycerine or glycerol. Its nature is hygroscopic. It comes from both plant and animal sources and is found in lipids like triglycerides.Glycerol is a desirable bio-based platform substance that can be transformed into a number of different bio-based substances.

BIO-BASED GLYCERIN MARKETNEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

Eni,BASF launched a new-tech initiative to produce propanol from glycerin.A strategic partnership between Eni and BASF has been established to lessen the transportation industry's carbon footprint.

With the help of the partnership, enhanced biopropanol will be made from glycerin, a byproduct of the manufacturing of industrial biodiesel, which Eni will buy from European suppliers. The method in development uses a novel, catalytic hydrotreatment procedure to transform glycerin into propanol.

The innovative method involves applying a high-pressure hydrogenation reaction over a BASF catalyst to make biopropanol with a high yield and purity while producing the fewest byproducts possible. When compared to fossil fuels, biopropanol has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 to 75 percent.

This novel way of obtaining propane makes it simple to include it into petrol as a drop-in biofuel component. Biopropanol is a valuable ingredient for the creation of premium petrol due to its superior physicochemical qualities compared to bioethanol and its extremely high octane number.

Byproducts from the biodiesel sector account for more than half of the world's glycerin output; each tonne of biodiesel yields about 10% glycerin. The world's glycerin production climbed as a result of rising biodiesel production. Glycerin is categorised as an advanced biofeedstock because it is a vegetable waste.

Glycerin-to-advanced-biopropanol technology is a component of Eni's commitment to decarbonization research and development. This partnership is aligned with Eni's vision for creating "advanced generation" biofuel supply chains from feedstocks that do not compete with food supply chains and allows us to expedite innovation and significantly cut time to market.
