On a wood-frame house, brick veneer is essentially a single layer of full-size, fill-thickness brick. Brick veneer is frequently found in newer homes (and occasionally in older ones). Looking at the sides of the home is one way to occasionally notice brick veneer.
If the front is brick but the sides and rear are covered in siding of some sort, one can tell the front is only one layer thick and is not supporting the structure. A single non-structural external layer of Brick veneer, often built of brick, stone, or artificial stone, makes up Brick veneer walls.
Brick veneer is properly referred to as “anchored veneer” and it can have an air space underneath it. “Adhered veneer” is a Brick veneer that is firmly fastened to the backing. The structurally important innermost component can be a masonry, concrete, wood, or metal frame.
The airspace also serves as a drainage plane because brick is not waterproof by itself. This allows any water that has permeated the veneer to drain to the bottom of the air space, where it comes into contact with flashing (weatherproofing), where it is then directed to the outside through weep holes rather than entering the building.
Additional insulation, usually in the form of rigid foam, can be added to the air space to improve the wall’s thermal performance. Instead of waiting for the entire wall structure to be finished before moving forward with the roof and upper floors, the structural framing or masonry backup can be erected first to allow the rest of the building structure to be completed concurrently with the Brick veneer.
Compared to a solid masonry wall, a veneer wall can be built in less time and with less effort, which results in cost savings.A veneer wall can weigh considerably less than a complete masonry wall, saving money on foundation costs and structural support.Brick veneer are a lighter-weight, more affordable alternative.
