Every material and method used in the construction of a ski influences its personality on the snow: how stiff or flexible it is, how heavy it is, how well it can hold an edge, the list goes on.
While fiberglass has dominated the market as the go-to material for ski construction for years, in the last decade, the introduction of carbon fiber into the sports equipment industry has led to many ski manufacturers putting it inside their skis.
Much more expensive than fiberglass, carbon fiber’s extra cost is attributed to its extremely light weight for how stiff it is. This weight reduction from fiberglass makes carbon a popular material in most backcountry and touring skis, where every ounce counts.
Carbon fiber still skis well, but using it for a carving or all-mountain ski means that you’ll feel a lot more imperfections in the snow and the skis will deflect more naturally (often called “chatter”). An oversimplified illustration to show that fiberglass as a composite is stronger and heavier than a carbon fiber.
The bottom line here is that going with a carbon ski does in fact affect your downhill performance. It may be lighter, but it is drastically less damp which can lead to chatter in harder conditions. If the allure of carbon skis is enticing to buy a pair.
The Global carbon fiber skis market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
