A type of biofuel called cellulosic bioethanol is created from lignocellulose, which makes up a large portion of plant mass. Some of the more well-liked non-edible cellulosic resources for ethanol production include corn stover, switchgrass, miscanthus, and woodchip.
It takes more work to produce ethanol from cellulosic feedstocks than it does from crops with a starch-based structure, such grass, wood, and crop wastes. Cellulosic bioethanol can be produced using either a biological process or a thermochemical process.
Pretreatment is used to decrease sample size, convert hemicelluloses to sugars, and open up the structure of the cellulose component in order to make bioethanol from cellulosic biomass. The cellulose component is degraded into glucose sugar by acids or enzymes, which is then fermented to produce bioethanol.
Global cellulosic bioethanol market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
The specialised chemical company Clariant said that its sunliquid manufacturing facility in Podari, Romania, had created the first batch of cellulosic bioethanol for sale1. Shell, a top global oil firm, has a multi-year deal for the whole offtake. The factory conducted a thorough commissioning procedure during the previous six months, which led to a smooth commencement of production.
250,000 tonnes of agricultural leftovers sourced locally will be converted into about 50,000 tonnes of second-generation biofuels. This plant’s cellulosic ethanol can be used as a drop-in replacement for other fuels and also has prospects for other downstream uses such as the production of bio-based chemicals and sustainable aviation fuel.
Clariant is motivated to provide creative solutions by the fundamental goal of constructing a more sustainable future. “The advanced biofuel produced by the sunliquid technology process promotes the decarbonization of the transportation sector by providing up to 120% CO2 reductions compared to fossil fuel.
It is also pleasing to see that we were able to commence cellulosic ethanol production at their flagship sunliquid plant on schedule despite the global epidemic.
This advances their licencing business model and demonstrates the viability of commercialising Clariant’s technology.
