Gogoro has unveiled what they claim to be the first swappable lithium ceramic solid-state battery for two-wheelers in the world in Taiwan. Also, a new study debunked a long-held belief that solid-state batteries would be unsafe if some liquid electrolytes were added to boost performance. Instead, it found that solid-state batteries were safer and more powerful than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

 

Solid-state devices have been heavily invested in by a number of legacy automakers, including Toyota and Volkswagen, despite the relatively unproven nature of the technology. In the meantime, electric scooter manufacturer Gogoro has unveiled a prototype lithium ceramic solid-state battery that can be swapped out for two wheels.

 

The prototype was developed in collaboration with ProLogium, a Taiwanese company that specializes in solid-state batteries. ProLogium recently formed a partnership with Mercedes-Benz, a German manufacturer of luxury automobiles, to codevelop a line of passenger vehicles that are powered by batteries of this kind.

 

Gogoro's solid-state batteries, which are said to be the first of their kind in the world, are estimated to have a capacity of 2.5 kWh. This is significantly more than the current capacity of exchange batteries that use lithium-ion technology and a liquid electrolyte, which is 1.7 kWh.

 

For the market in Taiwan, where Gogoro Battery Swapping powers 95% of all electric two-wheelers, the prototype announcement is especially significant. The brand-new prototype of Gogoro can be integrated with the company's existing fleet of vehicles and battery swap network, which includes more than 2,300 locations with over 450,000 riders served by over 10,000 battery swapping stations.

 

The manufacturer claims that the number of its swapping stations is likely to soon surpass the number of petrol pumps in the country.
