A popular traditional method of reinforcing is chopped strand mat (CSM).Used in a range of hand lay-up and open-mold applications, chopped strand mat (CSM) is a random fiber mat that offers equal strength in all directions.
To create a "sheet" of random fiber mat, continuous strand roving is cut into short 1.5 to 3 inch lengths, and the cut fibers are then distributed randomly along a moving belt. The mat is trimmed and rolled after a binder is applied to keep the fibers together.
The Global Chopped strand mat resin market accounted for $XX Billion in 2023 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2024 to 2030.
As a new addition to their Ultimate line of reinforcements, Ilium Composites recently launched chopped strand mat (CSM).
Using Ilium's unique technique, the CSM is put together without the use of stitching or a chemical glue and has a thin integrated polyester surface veil. It is now sold in rolls of 1,270mm with non-standard widths available and comes in a range of weights from 225g/m2 to 600g/m2.
Since it was created as a premium CSM, the product would outperform its rivals in many ways and be used for tasks that in the past needed a lot of steps and more money. All Ilium reinforcements come equipped with an excellent surface finish, osmosis protection, and chemical protection.
Due to the CSM's inherent cold-formability and lack of a chemical binder, the user can apply it right away to deeper geometries of mold cavities.
Numerous matrices, including polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, polyurethane, and more, are compatible with a single version of Ultimate CSM.
As a result of receiving endorsements from significant boat builders around the world, Ilium's premium CSM can be utilized as the initial protective layer in marine hulls and hard tops.
Ultimate CSM is also more environmentally friendly and adaptable to sustainable resin systems because of the option to remove styrene, which also lowers the amount of volatile organic compounds.
