    By improving each component of the battery system holistically, COBRA intends to create a unique cobalt-free lithium-ion battery technology that addresses many of the present problems with Electrical Vehicle (EV) batteries. The battery chemistry used by COBRA will combine an LNMO cathode with a composite anode made of silicon nanoparticles and graphite as active particles.

     

    The project will produce a distinctive battery system that combines a number of highly desired characteristics, including greater energy density, low cost, more cycles, and fewer key materials.

     

    SVOLT, a Chinese EV battery company, has introduced what it calls the first cobalt-free battery in history. The company displayed its cutting-edge battery pack inside an Ora Cherry Cat made by Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motors at the Chengdu Motor Show.

     

    SVOLT now claims to have a 100% cobalt-free battery with an 82.5KWh capacity that can travel 600 km on a single charge and accelerate a car from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds. Though it hasn’t provided a specific date, the company stated that its sustainable product is anticipated to be on sale in China. 

     

    Panasonic, a significant Tesla battery supplier, announced its new lithium-ion cells with a cobalt content of around 5%. The Japanese corporation intends to further reduce that percentage to zero in the following two to three years, an effort that is difficult from the standpoint of manufacturing but is worthwhile for both financial and environmental considerations.

     

    After consulting with its community, Sono Motors, the Munich-based manufacturer of the ground-breaking Sion SEV (Solar Electric Vehicle), decided to upgrade the vehicle’s battery to a 54kWh one with a longer range and no cobalt, nickel, or manganese. The Sion solar car was unveiled by Sono Motors earlier this year, boasting a 120kW motor with 270Nm of torque and a top speed of 140km/h.

     

    The Sion’s PV capacity is said to be able to generate enough charge for up to 34 kilometres thanks to the integration of 248 polymer solar panels that are embedded in the exterior of the vehicle. Sono Motors, on the other hand, disclosed that they were now choosing a more potent 54kWh battery, offering a range of up to 305km when running solely on batteries, and increasing its maximum charging power to 75kW.
