    The British government recently unveiled its Integrated Rail Plan, which will allow passengers to use debit or credit cards to make touchless fare transactions at more than 700 train stations across the North and Midlands.

     

    While these regions’ commuter stations will be the first to use contactless pay-as-you-go ticketing, the UK government intends to make the technology available to all stations across the country soon.

     

    According to the UK government, the implementation will take place over the next few years and will encompass bus and tram networks as well as trains. Contactless tap-in and tap-out payments should reduce the need for ticket queues and fee offices while also simplifying fare pricing.

     

    This is part of a larger trend among transit agencies to experiment with new fare payment systems in order to entice riders back to their platform. More than half of agencies are investigating mobile ticketing, while just under half plan to implement contactless payment systems, according to a recent survey from Smart Cities.

    INDIA CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS MARKET

    Contactless payment was already growing at a rapid pace since Mid- 2018.The continued surge of COVID cases in the country has given it a further push which will continue in the foreseeable future.

Technology is incorporated into the feature to enable third-party payment networks to implement the system for their own users.

     

    With more coming later this year, Stripe Inc. will be the first payment platform to make the capability available to users. Given that so many small businesses rely on Square’s products and services, it is difficult to predict how much the rollout would influence them.

     

    The function also draws attention to Apple’s monopoly over mobile payments, a crucial antitrust defence of the iPhone manufacturer. For years, several payment firms have complained to governments about how the tech giant only uses the iPhone’s NFC chip for Apple Pay.
