The portion of organic carbon that can flow through a filter with pores that are typically between 0.22 and 0.7 micrometres in size is known as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Particulate organic carbon is the portion that is still on the filter (POC).
One of the largest repositories of cycled organic matter on Earth, DOC is prevalent in freshwater and marine ecosystems and can make all organic carbon and the same amount of carbon as the atmosphere.
In general, processes of decomposition from deceased organic matter, such as plants and animals, result in organic carbon molecules. Any particular body of water can include DOC from both inside and outside of it.
The term autochthonous DOC refers to DOC that originates from within a body of water and often comes from aquatic plants or algae, whereas the term allochthonous DOC refers to DOC that originates from outside a body of water and typically comes from soils or terrestrial plants.
Water can contain components that can drain as DOC into rivers and lakes when it comes from land areas with a lot of organic soil.
The Global dissolved organic carbon sensor market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
The DOC produced by macroalgae for the sensor was quantified over a 12-hour period by using 4-L glass incubation chambers. Four trials in total were carried out one for each of the three chosen species and one as a seawater control.
Each experiment used 20 g of wet weight material for U. intestinalis and F. lumbricalis, which were incubated in separate chambers, and 10 biological replicates of distinct individuals for F. vesiculosus.
Each experiment had two treatments, five duplicates of each in total darkness PAR determined using a Li-Cor light metre and saturating light (PAR), for a total of ten simultaneous incubations.
The incubations were carried out in a chamber with a regulated temperature that reflected the temperature of the surrounding sea at the time the samples were collected. Each incubation chamber received aeration and water motion from free-flowing bubblers.
