INTRODUCTION

   A rechargeable battery that powers the electric motors of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is referred to as an electric vehicle battery (EVB, also known as a traction battery). They are typically lithium-ion batteries that are made to have a high capacity for electric charges (or energy).

 

Electric vehicle batteries are different from starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) batteries in that they are deep-cycle and designed to provide power for extended periods of time. The specific energy, energy density, and relatively high power-to-weight ratio of electric vehicle batteries make them stand out.

 

Smaller, lighter batteries are desirable because they make the vehicle lighter and, as a result, make it perform better. The majority of current battery technologies have a much lower specific energy than liquid fuels, limiting vehicles' all-electric range.

 

Due to their high energy density for their weight, lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries are the most common types of batteries in contemporary electric vehicles.

 

Lead-acid (flooded, deep-cycle, and valve-regulated lead acid), nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and, less frequently, zinc-air and sodium nickel chloride (zebra) batteries are among the other types of rechargeable batteries utilized in electric vehicles.

 

The total energy is typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and the amount of electricity (i.e. electric charge) stored in batteries is measured in coulombs or ampere hours.
