INTRODUCTION TO THE EV TRACTION MOTOR MARKET

The electric motor that propels an electric vehicle’s wheels is known as the traction motor. Usually placed close to the wheels, the traction motor is connected to the wheels either directly or through a gearbox.

In order to turn the wheels, the traction motor converts electrical energy from the vehicle’s battery or another power source into mechanical energy. An electronic controller that manages the motor’s supply of electrical power controls the motor’s operation.

The controller instructs the traction motor to accelerate when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal. The engine produces greater torque as it spins more quickly, which is utilised to turn the wheels and propel the car ahead.

The controller decreases the electrical power provided to the traction motor when the driver applies the brakes, forcing it to slow down and produce less torque. In some circumstances, the motor may also function as a generator, creating electrical power that is stored in the battery utilising the kinetic energy of the car.

Overall, the EV traction motor is an essential part of how an electric vehicle functions, enabling it to move effectively, silently, and without emitting any emissions.

European carmakers successfully lobbied for a rule that qualified to emit less than 50g of carbon dioxide per kilometer vehicle eligible for so-called super-credits. In other words, every electric vehicle sold will be counted as two cars. That makes it easier for carmakers to meet their targets, even if average emissions from their cars are actually higher than the rules allow them to be

VW and Audi are the latest entrant to start in-sourcing of motors. Given the negative perception of Diesel in Europe by regulatory authorities and the 95gm CO2 fleet average limit by 2021 in the EU, left VW and Audi with no choice but to go all-electric and manufacture motors in-house.

The global EV traction motor market is estimated at $3.1 Billion in 2020 and will grow to $7.5 Billion in 2025. <100kW motors accounted for 68% of all traction motors produced in 2020.
