    GLOBAL FIBER OPTIC DOSIMETER MARKET

    INTRODUCTION

A photonic system based on optical fiber technology is an optical fiber radiation dosimeter, which uses radiation to change or modulate some of the characteristics of the optical signal.

An intrinsic sensor is one in which the optical fibers are directly affected by the radiation and is referred to as such, while an external sensor is one in which they are only used for the purpose of transmitting the optical signal.

The various dosimetry techniques that can incorporate optical fibers to further enhance the system as a whole are discussed in turn, along with examples of such systems based on optical fibers.

The type of interaction between the incident radiation and the sensor is the primary characteristic of radiation dosimeters.

The various kinds of radiation dosimeters have very different interactions. Semiconductor dosimeters, for instance, use radiation to generate an electric charge, while many optical sensors rely on a shift in the material’s optical properties in response to radiation.

Gamma dosimetry materials must be highly sensitive to gamma radiation within the appropriate dose ranges for the particular application.

The effects of the ionising radiation on various materials have been investigated, and the results will be discussed in the following sections.

    NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet recently installed Lumina in the Columbus lab of the International Space Station, the first fiber-optic dosimeter designed to measure radiation levels. Already, the initial data have been sent back to Earth for examination.

The device, based on two fiber-optic coils several kilometres long, was designed by iXblue and Laboratoire Hubert Curien for the CNES with assistance from CERN as part of the Alpha mission.

It was made to measure radiation exposure with high precision, which is a critical challenge for ensuring the safety of astronauts and equipment in space.Lumina’s development relied heavily on iXblue’s strong expertise in radiation-hardened electronics for space and radio-sensitive fibers.
