    FUEL CELL COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET

KEY FINDINGS OF FUEL CELL COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET

    1. The market is eager for a safe fuel cell especially for purposes that generally have a fixed route. To ensure this, vehicles will have to be built with safety in mind while hydrogen fuelling stations will also have to be set up accordingly
    2. The cost for a fuel cell vehicle right now is not one that operators can bear easily hence will require help from the government
    3. The fuel cell vehicle can offer the power offered by a diesel-powered vehicle. Hence will be preferred over electric commercial vehicle if the other factors such as fuelling etc. are of similar costs
    4. To develop fuel cell technology especially for commercial purposes, governments are combining with universities and private players to distribute the gains throughout while developing cleaner energy
    5. The supply chain for this type of vehicle will also have to be addressed as right now manufacturing is mainly from South Korea, Japan and China
    6. Daimler Truck AG and Volvo Group launched their strategy for “CellCentric”, their new fuel-cell joint venture
    7. Hyundai Motor has surpassed Toyota Motor in the global sales of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and regained its number one position in this segment
    8. In 2020, a total of 1,108 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses were sold in the Asia Pacific region.
    9. First double-decker hydrogen fuel-cell electric bus was launched in London. These 20 new FCEV double decker buses will reduce TfL’s carbon footprint to ensure zero emission by 2030 in London.

INTRODUCTION OF FUEL CELL COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET

COVID-19 IMPACT ON FUEL CELL COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MARKET

COVID-19 has affected the production and sales of new vehicles across the globe as the whole ecosystem had been disrupted in the initial outbreak. Due to this pandemic, many countries had imposed a complete lockdown of more than two months, which in turn has impacted vehicle production.

OEMs had to wait until lockdowns were lifted to resume production and also, component manufacturing was suspended which leads to liquidity issues for small tier manufacturers. Thus, the production suspension during the initial months of outbreak and lower demand due to higher cost had an impact on the fuel cell commercial vehicle market.

However the conditions improved in the latter months, but the overall FCEV market didn’t suffer much as demand for zero emission vehicles increased during the latter months of 2020. Many countries increased their investments across the globe to develop hydrogen fuel infrastructure and incentives were offered to buyers to create opportunities for OEMs to expand the fuel cell market.

The major factors such as growing demand for low emission commuting, growing mass urban transportation and rising demand for alternative fuels along with government support will increase the growth of the fuel cell commercial vehicle market.

Hydrogen cell buses have been the primary driver of the fuel cell vehicle market. These buses have shorter fueling times and better maneuverability because they are significantly lighter than battery electric buses.

The advantages of FCEV vehicles over battery electric trucks is that, these vehicles are lighter than battery electric vehicles making them better suited to carry heavy cargo and these vehicles travel much longer distances than battery electric vehicles making them well equipped for long transportation increased the demand for fuel cell commercial vehicle around the world.
