    E-AXLE MARKET

    KEY FINDINGS

    1. Europe and China cumulatively accounted for 86% of the global e-axle market value in 2021 and the share will grow to 87% in 2027. PHEV passenger cars will remain the dominant application, followed by electric buses
    2. There is a shift in usage of e-axle among passenger vehicles, before it was for easier implementation and quick shift from ICE to plugged in, but now dedicated platforms are being built which will use e-axles such as Geely’s SEA platform
    3. Increasing focus on bus and truck electrification is an e-axle opportunity in Europe. Buses will be the main focus till 2027, while electrified trucks will gather pace after 2025
    4. The average price of E-Axle in Chinese market is $XX at present and is likely to go up to $XX by 2027  due to increase in plugged in vehicle sales for both passenger and commercial especially BEVs
    5. Traction Motor is often the most expensive component of an e-axle roughly accounts for XX% of the total cost, followed by power electronics
    6. E-axles will remain XX% more expensive than the low cost, individually bought/manufactured traction motor + transmission combo
    7. The main components of E-axles such as Motor, Power Electronics and Batteries are highly heat producing hence OEMs look to integrate the best possible thermal management solutions for high output
    8. Electric vehicles (EVs) featuring 800V electrical systems could achieve much faster charging and reduced weight, allowing them to travel further between charges and to function well with a flexible e-axle model.
    9. BorgWarner’s integrated drive module (iDM) was selected by the Hyundai Motor Group for its power electric system, which will be used in the upcoming A-segment electric vehicle production, planned to start in mid of 2023.
    10. Exro to partner with Linamar to develop advanced e-Axle with Coil Driver intelligent coil switching. Initial demonstration of this technology will utilize Linamar’s Medium-Duty eAxle product.

    INTRODUCTION E-AXLE MARKET

An e-axle combines  electric motor, power inverter, transmission and differential  in a single package. It allows neat packaging and simplified integration in even older vehicle platforms.

GKN produced world`s first mass production two speed e-axle in 2014, for BMW i8. The development came at a time when most of the EV transmission in use was single speed.

    E-AXLE MARKET DYNAMICS

    SI No Timeline Company Developments
1  2021 Nidec Nidec expects to have produced more than 10 million E-Axle units by 2030.It is boosting it’s speed of R&D to construct traction motor mass-production systems globally in order to obtain a 40–45 percent global market share.
2 2021 GKN Driveline The world’s first two-speed eDrive system made feasible by GKN Automotive’s  global competence in high-performance torque system integration.

The initial adoption of E-axles, started as a result of growth in all wheel drive (AWD), where some premium vehicle manufacturers replaced mechanical AWD with e-AWD.

The move was aimed at providing AWD with torque vectoring and reduced CO2 emission. Going forward, we believe this global trend of vehicle electrification will be a major growth driver for E-axle market.

The supply chain of EV manufacturing is completely different than gas powered cars. Also, the supply chain of EVs is still evolving whereas that of gas powered cars is matured and well established. This marked difference in production of EVs has led many OEMs create a separate brand for their “green vehicle” segment.

Owing to complexity in EV manufacturing, OEMs are designing modular and scalable electric vehicle architecture. The advantage being, they could source just one e-axle from a supplier rather than sourcing individual power-train components from multiple suppliers.

The market trend is clearly towards more compact, power dense and efficient E-axles.

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has placed orders for electric axles for mid-size and large-size battery-electric vehicles with Hitachi Astemo, Ltd., a world leader in electrification.

As a systems integrator, Hitachi Astemo will provide Honda with a high-performance, integrated drive unit, with the e-Axle system combining a highly effective silicon carbide (SiC) inverter, a square-wire, low-loss, and high-efficiency motor, and a small, silent gearbox from a gearbox manufacturer.

    E-AXLE MARKET PASSENGER VEHICLE SEGMENT

China accounts for 50% of global EV sales, almost all domestic manufacturers have declared plans to set up a separate EV brand, but very few of them have fitted their vehicles with an e-axle.

In 2021, EV sales increased by about 153% year-over-year, from 1.27 million in 2020 to 3.22 million. BEVs comprised 82.6% and PHEVs comprised 17.4% of total EV sales in 2021

The EV market in China is heavily skewed towards  low powered compacts using single speed transmission. The entry level cars(A00 and A0 segment) made up for just 18% share of overall NEV car sales in 2021

Read our EV transmission report to know more about it.

In passenger vehicle segment, Europe is leading and also driving global market growth for E-axles.BMW+ Mini was the market leader in EV(BEV+ PHEV)s in Europe, it had 15% share of ~500,000 EVs sold in Europe in 2019 but in 2020 its share reduced to 7% .

The E-axle equipped 2 Series Active Tourer sales grew by more than 6% in 2019.Going forward, the sales of BMW and Mini PHEVs will have a significant impact on E-axle volumes in Europe.

Audi is trying to catch-up fast and announced in Feb 2019 that it will start offering PHEV variants of its high-end models like A6,A7, A8 and Q5.But, it is more likely to use dedicated hybrid transmission than E-axle.

The onset of WLTP in Europe in Sep`18 has provided a much needed boost to EV manufacturing in the region and  driven PHEV adoption.

In US, where SUVs and Pickups make up for  ~71% of annual new car sales, ~25-28%of those vehicles are fitted with mechanical 4WD/AWD. As the average transaction prices of SUVs and pickups now exceed $45,000, we expect few of them to be powered by E-axle in their next refresh/update.

Tesla had 72% market share of electric vehicles in US, and 21% share of global BEVs in 2021, but it does not have e-axle in any of them.It uses its in-house developed induction/PMSRM motors for propulsion.Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling passenger car globally, in terms of revenue, generating ~$8 Billion in US alone.

    E-AXLE MARKET NEW ACQUISITION

Noscos, a provider of AI/ML solutions for video and images based in Riga, Latvia, has been purchased by Axle ai, a software firm that enables remote work for video teams. Noscos has developed pioneering face recognition and logo recognition software tools, as well as intuitive user interfaces for training these systems on massive datasets, with the support of Overkill Ventures.

Despite the fact that axle ai had previously created its own in-house face recognition libraries and worked with Microsoft’s Video Indexer technology, they elected to partner with Noscos first, then buy the company, its developers, and IP due to the clear benefits of Noscos’ approach. Arturs Sprogis, PhD, a cofounder of Noscos, has joined axle as Senior R&D manager, overseeing a merged team of engineers headquartered mostly in Latvia.

According to market research firm IDC, the amount of data generated globally is expected to grow rapidly to 175 zettabytes. Another advantage of the axle ai systems is that they enable remote access to high-resolution media processes for the first time using web browsers.

NOSCOS’ solutions, which will be renamed axle Faces and axle Logos, have several distinct advantages versus AI/ML toolsets from large-scale cloud providers such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.

By announcing the acquisition of Meritor, a Michigan-based provider of drivetrain, mobility, brakes, aftermarket, and electric powertrain solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial applications, Cummins has taken another step toward its aim of creating zero-carbon solutions.

The information comes after Cummins recently revealed new engine platforms that can run on a range of fuels, including hydrogen and natural gas.

The acquisition, according to Cummins, will hasten the development of its electric-power solutions. E-axles are one topic that the engine manufacturer is interested in.

“Cummins thinks that eAxles will play a crucial role in the integration of hybrid and electric drivetrains. Cummins anticipates providing market-leading solutions to clients worldwide by stepping up Meritor’s commitment in electrification and integrating development inside its New Power business.

According to Cummins, the acquisition is anticipated to generate synergies in cost-cutting, supply chain efficiency, and acceleration of Meritor’s core axle and brake business.

    E-AXLE MARKET RECENT LAUNCH

Dana Incorporated has announced the addition of a line of single and tandem e-Axles to its Spicer Electrified e-Powertrain products for a variety of Class 7 and 8 applications.

Dana’s existing heavy-duty electric-vehicle (EV) e-Propulsion systems, which are currently powering thousands of vehicles across the world, are supplemented by the Spicer ElectrifiedTM Zero-8 e-Axles.

The Zero-8 e-Axles are precision developed for demanding over-the-road applications, utilising Dana’s most robust and efficient driving axle technology.

Dana’s approach to meeting the diverse landscape of Class 7 and 8 EV architectures with multi-faceted electric powertrain solutions, including systems for direct drive and now 4×2, 6×2, and 6×4 multi-speed e-Axle systems, is supported by the new e-Axle portfolio.

Dana has taken its expertise in heavy-duty e-Powertrain systems around the world to develop a complementary series of e-Axles that provide optimal efficiency, performance, and dependability.

These new product platforms make use of our proven vertically integrated motors and inverters to increase packaging and efficiency for our customers’ electric car needs.

The new e-Axles are designed to fit into most existing chassis with ease. Dana’s vertically integrated and long-standing technology, such as Dana TM4TM motors and inverters, Spicer high-efficiency axle gearing, Graziano synchronizers, transmission controllers, system software, and shift system and controls, are all utilised in the platform.

A new 4-in-1 e-axle has been released by electric drivetrain manufacturer Schaeffler. “Such highly integrated complete systems are attractive for both established and new players in the automotive industry. The electric motor, power electronics, transmission, and thermal management system are all contained within the e-4-in-1 axle’s layout.

In comparison to non-integrated solutions, this results in a highly integrated and compact complete system. Because Schaeffler’s experts always take into account the thermal behavior of individual drive components like the electric motor or the power electronics as well as the most effective and thorough thermal management of the entire vehicle, the design also offers efficiency.

The Ampere-220 electric axle drive was unveiled by British electric drive expert Equipmake. It combines one or two 220-kW motors with all power electronics, including silicon carbide inverters and gearboxes, in a single unit and is intended for manufacturers of high-performance electric vehicles.

The Ampere-220 has a power density of 11 kW per kg, which is more than twice that of a typical electric motor and only 20 kilogrammes in weight. The electric drive system for the two-motor version has a total weight of 85 kg and provides 440 kW of peak power per axle. At the Equipmake headquarters in Snetterton, County Norfolk, England, the electric axle drive is created.

At the IAA transport show in Hannover, Germany, Volvo Trucks unveiled a brand-new, entirely electric rear axle. The new e-axle allows for the addition of more batteries, extending the range of Volvo’s battery-powered trucks even further. The ability to travel farther thanks to more batteries opens up the possibility of electrifying long-distance transportation.

The extra room is useful for installing other components on the fuel cell electric trucks that will be available in the second half of this decade. This is a significant development for electric trucks and a strong indication that there will soon be a great need for public fast-charging stations for large trucks, especially along highways.

    E-AXLE MARKET RECENT PARTNERSHIP

In order to jointly develop heavy-duty Class 7 and Class 8 battery-electric vehicles, Xos, Inc., a leading manufacturer and services provider of Class 5 through Class 8 battery-electric vehicles, powertrains, charging infrastructure, and fleet management software, has partnered with Allison Transmission, Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial-duty, fully-automatic transmissions and a leading manufacturer of electric hybrid and fully-electric propulsion systems.

Low scale of EVs has not allowed suppliers to achieve economies of scale. Further, the OEM margins on BEVs and PHEVs are already low, as the market is driven more by regulation than consumer demand.

There are about 15 Tier-1 suppliers active in E-axle market. GKN is the undisputed market leader in this space but its leadership is likely to be challenged in coming years by Nidec. In Feb 2020, Nidec launched two E-axles i.e. a 50kW version for PHEVs/Kei cars where it has no presence as of date and a 200kW version which will be aimed at Premium BEVs.

Nidec’s products are used in GAC’s Aion S, Aion LX, Aion V, GAC Toyota’s iA5, Hycan 007 and Geometry C. They expect innovators to utilise E-axle in their vehicle range which will later shift to early adopters and early majority. Nidec believed, the profits will mainly come from early adopters onwards post 2025

GKN`s products have featured on more than 15 EV models across the globe. In addition, it has a very diverse portfolio including single-speed, co-axial and multi-speed e-axles which allows it to cater to diverse requirements and gives it an edge over others.

In Q3-2019, Vitesco( Continental) struck deal with PSA and Hyundai for supply of E-axles to high volume platforms. Vitesco`s new electric drive system will be supplied for PSA`s e-CMP modular electric platform, powering battery electric vehicle models such as the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e. The Hyundai China through its joint venture Beijing Hyundai will equip two models with Vitesco Technologies’ electric drive system: the Encino compact SUV and the Lafesta sedan.

Bosch has a more versatile and scalable product, which can cater to passenger as well as commercial vehicles but its market reach has been limited so far. There are also some new entrants like Sona Group, Hyllion and AxleTech(now acquired by Meritor).

The biggest challenge for E-axle suppliers is to fight of competition from hybrid transmissions in PHEVs and single speed(very cost effective) transmission in BEVs. The cost factor is secondary because conversion of an ICE only to PHEV costs about $4,000 including batteries.

E-AXLE MARKET RECENT DEVELOPMENT ELECTRIC DRIVE AXLE

A new push for electric transportation The Schaeffler 4 in 1 electric axle improved comfort and range as a result of cutting-edge thermal management a system’s efficiency is increased as a result of the interaction of its electric motor, gearbox, power electronics, and thermal management components.

more variations as a result of new electric beam axles for pickup vehicles The focus of Schaeffler is electric transportation. By concurrently introducing a number of innovative electric axle drives (electric axles), the company is showing this.

“A vital component of their electric mobility strategy is electric axles. Up until now, three driving components may be combined into a single small unit. Schaeffler is now taking things a step further with the so-called 4in1 electric axle by incorporating the thermal management system together with the electric motor, power electronics and gearbox into the axle drive. As a result, the axle drive is more comfortable and lightweight.

A car can travel further on a single battery charge and charges more quickly thanks to a very effective thermal management technology. Pickup truck electric beam axles are another recent innovation. Schaeffler will in the future provide beam axles to automakers, primarily in North America.

In electric cars, heat is a precious and scarce resource. For example, they lack the internal combustion engine waste heat needed to heat the inside. Furthermore, the range and quick charging capacity largely depend on whether, for instance, the battery can be kept in an appropriate temperature window, particularly at high and low outdoor temperatures.

This is due to the fact that Schaeffler’s experts always take into account both the most effective and thorough thermal management of the entire vehicle as well as the thermal behavior of particular drive components such as the electric motor or the power electronics.

For instance, a sophisticated management system makes sure that extra heat is effectively removed from the electric motor and power electronics and utilized within the car. The temperature of the battery is also controlled so that it may charge more quickly and allow the automobile to travel farther on a single charge.
