INTRODUCTION
A hospital ship is a vessel that is intended to serve primarily as a floating hospital or medical institution.Since they are designed to be employed in or close to combat zones, the armed forces operate the majority of them.
The Second Geneva Convention forbids military attacks on hospital ships that adhere to certain standards, while belligerent forces are allowed to inspect such ships and may detain patients as prisoners of war but not employees.
This medical experiment was short-lived, though, as Goodwill was soon given new responsibilities and her convalescents were simply left behind at the closest port.Only two ships in the whole Royal Navy fleet were officially recognised as hospital ships.
The internal bulkheads had been removed to provide extra space, and new ports had been cut into the deck and hull to improve internal ventilation. These were either chartered commerce ships or aged sixth rates. These hospital ships were manned by a surgeon and four surgeon’s mates in addition to their sailing crew.
Bandages, soap, needles, and bedpans were the standard medical supplies distributed. Patients were provided a fresh set of linens as well as a bed or rug to sleep on. These first hospital ships were designed to treat the sick rather than the injured, with patients being divided into groups according to their symptoms and infectious cases being segregated from the rest of the community behind a canvas sheet.
Similar to hospitals, nursing homes, or other healthcare infrastructure, hospital ships are built with the purpose of providing medical care. In other words, a hospital ship mimics an extensive medical facility that is depending on size, type, and need and has various features.

The Indian Navy is going to build a hospital ship called NHS. The Indian Navy wants to purchase one ship through this programme. This class of ship will have a capacity for modern medical facilities.
According to the RFI, the navy is looking to build a task-specific ship that can offer patients on the open seas transportable, all-inclusive medical care. Given two crucial considerations, the procurement of such a ship for the Indian Navy’s fleet seems timely.
Despite being typically unarmed, medical ships play a crucial tactical and strategic role for navies both in times of war and at peace. Hospital ships serve as versatile military equipment that can improve maritime capability.
Hospital ships have been needed for ages, even before, when conflicts and battles in many parts of the globe called for the creation of these specialised sorts of ships.Since then, hospital ships have primarily been constructed as military platforms to act as temporary medical facilities needed in emergency situations such as wars or international conflicts when a large number of people including members of the armed forces and civilians need to be treated for wounds, injuries, and other various health-related issues.
