    NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

    As a part of a pilot project by Toyota Kirloskar Motor and International Center for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to study and evaluate the Toyota Mirai on Indian roads and climatic conditions, the Japanese automaker Toyota introduced India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric vehicle (FCEV), the Mirai. 

     

    The Toyota Mirai has a certified range of up to 650 kilometres on a single full charge and is propelled by a hydrogen fuel cell battery pack. According to Toyota, their objective is to achieve net-zero carbon (CO2) emission over the whole lifetime, which extends well beyond automobiles.

     

    India’s first locally created hydrogen fuel cell bus has been exhibited by Sentient Labs, a Pune-based R&D innovation facility. The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI), working together under the auspices of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, created the hydrogen fuel cell technology that powers the bus.

     

    Sentient Labs not only created the hydrogen fuel cell technology but also other crucial parts of the vehicle, like the battery pack, motor, and balance of the plant, locally. A 32-seat, air-conditioned bus measuring 9 metres long has all of these components installed. This is intended to use 30 kg of hydrogen and have a 450 km range. Modular architecture enables design adjustments to accommodate range and operational needs.

     

    MARKET DYNAMICS

    A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) was signed by Ballard Power Systems and the Adani Group to explore a combined investment case for the commercialisation of fuel cells in different transportation and industrial applications in India. According to the MOU, both parties would look at prospective collaborations across a range of areas, including fuel cell manufacturing in India. 

     

    An electric bus (e-Bus) measuring nine metres long has been given by Nuvera Fuel Cells, LLC in northeast India, powered by an E-60 hydrogen fuel cell engine. A regional effort to adopt various hydrogen mobility solutions includes the tourist bus.
