Power system operators and utilities can store energy for later use via a device called battery storage. An electrochemical device known as a battery energy storage system (BESS) charges (or gathers energy from the grid or a power plant) and then discharges that energy later to provide electricity or other grid services as required.
For grid-scale uses, a number of battery chemistries are already in use or being researched, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, redox flow, and molten salt (including sodium-based chemistries).
The India grid scale battery storage market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
With ambitious intentions to incorporate 175 gigawatts of renewable energy into the power system, India has launched its first grid-scale battery storage system. The 10-megawatt Advancion energy storage array is a collaborative venture between Mitsubishi and the American energy storage firm AES, and it was installed and is managed by Tata Power Delhi Distribution. The project, which was created to manage peak load, couldn't have come at a better moment for India.
Due to the high demand from commercial and industrial users, rooftop solar is now the green energy sector's fastest-growing subsegment. The nation is also funding a number of large-scale energy projects, and Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, is home to the largest solar farm in the globe with a 648 megawatt capacity.
But at the same time, the country's electrical system is vulnerable, and the expanding middle class and industrial sector are raising the need for dependable electricity. Indian power facilities that use natural gas as a backup source for the grid are also few in number.
As compared to many other nations, India has less gas-based power production to balance the grid, making storage comparatively more important for the development of renewables in India. In India, numerous energy storage procurement tenders have been launched in an effort to support solar projects or balance the grid. Both the penetration of renewable energy sources and energy storage is sure to rise as the costs of both technologies fall.
