The phrase “Invar,” which refers to its very low expansion or contraction with temperature changes, derives from the word “invariable.


    “In applications requiring high dimensional stability, such as huge aerostructure molds, engine valves, television shadow-mask frames, clocks, seismic creep gauges, precision instruments, and clock hands, invar is employed.


    Its pendulum rods and watch balance wheels were two of its early uses in precision regulator clocks. The pendulum clock was the most accurate timekeeper in existence when it was first created, with temperature fluctuations in pendulum length serving as its limiting factor. The first clock to use an Invar pendulum, the Riefler regulator clock.


    It had an accuracy of 10 milliseconds per day and was the dominant time standard in naval observatories and for national time services.When doing first-order (high-precision) elevation leveling in land surveying, Invar is utilized as the level staff (leveling rod) rather than wood, fiberglass, or other metals.
