The electrolyte affects things like the design of electrodes and the materials used to produce them. Alkali, molten carbonate, phosphoric acid, proton exchange membrane (PEM), and solid oxide are today's predominant electrolyte types. The first three electrolytes are liquids, while the final two are solids.
