Vientiane, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s capital, is home to an increasing population who live and work in a nexus of government, tourism, educational, religious, economic, and residential sectors. Its winding, narrow streets are clogged with traffic.
With technical and financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the city’s bus service, the Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise (VCSBE), has been improving its services from the central bus station to other points in Vientiane to encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transportation.
The Public transport will incorporate a long-term and safe traffic management system to guarantee that the BRT’s benefits, particularly for pedestrians, are maximised. When traffic lights and signalling at crosswalks, pavements, and universal accessible elements are installed, road safety problems will be solved.
The project will also install a parking management system, which will include on-street paid parking in the city centre area using electronic metres, to ensure smooth traffic flow and encourage people to use public transportation.
