    That process can involve a number of defined movements including flinging, dragging, moving and “pick-and-place“. To fold laundry, robots need a sensor to mimic the way a human’s fingers can feel the top layer of a towel or shirt and grasp the layers beneath it.

    Researchers could teach a robot to feel the top layer of cloth and grasp it, but without the robot sensing the other layers of cloth, the robot would only ever grab the top layer and never successfully fold the cloth.

    Previous attempts at getting robots to fold these items mainly focused on single-arm manipulation or complex iterative algorithms that require a large number of interactions and therefore take longer to complete.

    This remarkable new technological advancement, known as the Laundroid, is the result of a partnership between Daiwa House, the largest homebuilder in Japan, Panasonic, and Seven Dreamers, a technical firm that previously worked on the “Hayabusa” asteroid spacecraft and now aims to provide “space quality” technology and goods to people on Earth.

    The sleek device is created to resemble a typical cabinet. Daiwa House’s involvement in the project makes it possible that future packages of their homes will contain the Laundroid for homebuyers.

    The Laundroid was put to the test  at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) trade event in Japan, folding a freshly dried T-shirt using image analysis and robotics incorporated into the device.

    The system can determine the sort of clothes it has received using image analysis, at which point robotic operations necessary to fold the item are activated. Towels, skirts, shorts, and collared shirts can all be folded by the machine at this time. The developers hope to have socks figured out by the time the machine is released, but socks are still the robot’s toughest obstacle.

    According to estimates, a full load of laundry will take the machine about seven hours to fold if it isn’t sorted first. As a result, the machine can be set to fold laundry before bed or in the morning before work. Laundroid pre-orders will start the next year, then beta models will be made available, and finally commercial folding machines.

    The inventors intend to release the finished product after that, with the end goal of developing a complete wash, dry, and fold system so consumers may recover some of the estimated 18,000 hours, or 750 days, that individuals spend doing laundry throughout their lifetimes.
