    At Formnext, Nematx Releases The New Nex 01 Liquid Crystal Polymer 3d Printer. The Nex 01 is powered by a motion control system and slicing algorithm that give it micron-resolution 3D printing capabilities. It was created to enable high throughput manufacturing with maximum process control.

     

    They claim that these, along with the machine’s compatibility with Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP), make it well-suited to meeting industrial applications in the most demanding production situations. LCPs are composed of shorter, stiffer molecules that are arranged in a way that gives them appealing strength properties in comparison to materials like PEEKs or PEIs.

     

    NematX has created a Nematic 3D Printing method based on these polymers. This approach aligns LCPs along the print direction using fused filament fabrication (FFF) to produce products with improved mechanical properties. Using its technology, NematX claims to be able to produce prints with ultimate tensile strengths of 650 MPa and Young’s moduli of up to 25 GPa.

     

    The ETH Zurich spin-off’s strategy has also helped it gain recognition as a leader in the field and build a clientele. NematX has started marketing its own line of LCP filaments after winning the Formnext Start-up Challenge. 

     

    To complement its software and material offerings, NematX has introduced the NEX 01, a commercial 3D printer. To create parts with superior thermal, biological, mechanical, and chemical qualities, the system actually works by regulating the molecular alignment of LCPs during extrusion.

     

    The NEX 01 offers considerable potential throughput gains since, when compared to conventional 3D printing materials, LCPs can also be deposited with significantly higher precision and speed.
