    The active mass, which is highly reactive toward the electrophilic alkyl carbonates, is shielded from ongoing adverse interactions with solution species by the surface coatings that form on the litigated transition metal oxide cathodes.

    Experiments using complete graphite-Li1.2Mn0.56Co0.08Ni0.16O2 cells took advantage of the beneficial effects of fluorinated electrolyte solutions on the performance of high-voltage cathodes.

     

    Excellent cycling performance was seen with solutions containing 1% TMSP, tris(trimethylsilyl)-phosphate, and 2FEC, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (F-EPE), which also produced excellent results with Li-Li1.2Mn0.56Co0.08Ni0.16O2 cells in shorter tests.

     

    This electrolyte solution is an excellent candidate for other high-voltage cathode materials due to its remarkable electrochemical stability.
