Self-moving machines with revolving drums and teeth are called micro-milling machines. The drum’s teeth make contact with and scrape away at asphalt pavement as it rotates. The result is a sequence of tiny, parallel ribs on the pavement surface.
Micro-milling makes use of a drum with more numerous, narrowly spaced teeth. The pavement surface created by micro-milling contains more ribs that are spaced farther apart, giving the surface a finer texture.
Sweepers remove any millings that are still on the pavement after the cold milling machine. The texture of the pavement is appropriate for long-distance driving. Only a very little amount, if any, of increased pavement abrasion will result in wear to the pavement surface and the need for sweeping.
