Exceeding the speed limit has been found to be the cause of more than 50% road accidents and thus Antilock-Braking system(ABS) has the potential to reduce road fatalities by a significant margin ,therefore we are seeing a renewed push for it by many governments.

    MARKET DYNAMICS

China is now the biggest motorcycle market globally after India, Indonesia and Japan. In the first half of 2021, China sold 9.2 million motorcycles, up 24.4% as compared with 2020.

The second largest market India sold 6.7 million motorcycles, up 32.6% in the first half of 2021 as most people preferred individual mobility rather than using public transportation due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Japan sold 2.1 million motorcycles, up 19.5% in the first half of 2021 as compared with 2020. Although most countries were recovering from the coronavirus pandemic, some countries were still facing the impact of COVID-19.

Taiwan’s motorcycle market had reported a decline of 6.5% in the first half of 2021, Singapore & other countries in Asian region also reported a decline in their motorcycle sales in the first half of 2021.

The ABS legislation for two wheelers in India which came into effect in April 2019 will be the biggest growth driver for motorcycle ABS market in Asia. To know more about Motorcycle ABS market in India, read our report.

Single channel ABS is getting prominence in the Asian market owing to high share of low cost 150cc bikes (priced at <$1,500) sold in the region. In the dual channel ABS segment, the growth in big bike(>400cc) manufacturing in Thailand due to ASEAN trade pact (lower single digit tariffs on import) is an important growth driver.

    MARKET SIZE AND FORECAST

Honda,Hero,Yamaha, TVS and Bajaj are among the leading motorcycle manufacturers in Asia. Honda accounts for every third motorcycle sold in Asia and has more than 60% market share in ASEAN region.

Since two-wheelers in Asia are predominantly used for commuting to work and other intracity usage, the share of 50-125cc bikes in total sales is more than 85%. These vehicles either have dual drum brake setup or just a front disc with rear drum.

But off late things have been changing, as growth in income coupled with younger demography is fuelling demand for aspirational products. For example, the recent launch and success of KTM 125 in India implies that there is underlying demand for premium bikes in 125cc range. If KTM 125 succeeds in getting consistent volumes, we might see a few more premium 125cc models with single/dual channel ABS.

The motorcycle ABS market in Asia is estimated at XX Million units in 2020, growing at –% CAGR till 2026.

COVID-19 IMPACT ON MOTORCYCLE ABS MARKET IN ASIA

Novel coronavirus has affected various sectors across Asia. Among these, one of the major fields affected by it, is the automotive brake sector. Due to deeper and wider penetration of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic into the rural market, the manufacturing of motorcycles ABS is hindered due to supply chain disruptions, multiple phases of lockdown imposed by the governments, reduced sales of new motorcycles and a decline in working capital. As the ABS market is dependent on the production of motorcycles there could be an impact on production in the next 2-3 months, as OEMs are faced with a slowdown in the supply of semiconductors and ABS components. Additionally, fluctuations in the prices of raw materials and higher cost of maintenance restrained the growth of the motorcycle ABS market in Asia.

However, benefits have been more than damages as there is an increasing demand for individual mobility and tangible increased consciousness for safety among people. The market of motorcycle ABS systems has developed rapidly in the recent years due to implementation of new vehicle rule regulations by the governments all around the world and the ABS installation rate has increased significantly to reduce accidents on wet or dusty roads. India has also implemented ABS regulations since 2018, which will bring greater impetus to the development of the motorcycle ABS market in Asia.

In 2019, Taiwan government has announced that they will subsidize the installation or purchase of a new motorcycle with ABS, in which the government contributed US $130 to equip or buy a vehicle with ABS.

The increase in the number of auto collisions, increasing road traffic and congestion, increased safety awareness and development of advanced braking systems for motorcycles will increase the growth of the motorcycle ABS market in Asia.

RECENT TREND IN MOTORCYCLE ABS MARKET IN ASIA

German auto components maker Bosch planned to start manufacturing an anti-lock braking system (ABS) for motorcycles at Chakan plant, Pune from next fiscal year. Bosch planned to manufacture 7-8 lakh ABS for motorcycles per annum from 2022 to meet the increasing demand – August 2021

Brakes India announced the completion of the acquisition of its joint venture partner ZF Friedrichshafen AG’s shareholding. ZF recently acquired Wabco Holdings Inc and due to the resultant competitive situation, ZF divested its entire shareholding in Brakes India – June 2021

Bosch announced that they will begin their production of an anti-locking braking system for motorcycles at Amata plant in Rayong, Thailand during the second quarter of 2022. Apart from Japan and India, Amata plant will be Bosch’s third manufacturing site for motorcycle ABS around the world – May 2021

Brembo introduced its new brake fluid for motorcycles having an anti-lock braking system due to its high boiling point. This brake fluid can rise to 300 degree celsius without reaching boiling point. Brembo also introduced its new Sport T3 brake disc which is a direct replacement for original equipment disc brakes – March 2021

Continental India has achieved another milestone of producing one million Electronic Control Units (ECU) for passenger cars and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Controller for motorcycles – January 2020

Continental AG has introduced the third generation of the anti-lock braking system as they are very responsive and precise even at greater speed due to enhanced brake pressure control – February 2019

The worsening supply situation for semiconductors as well as the resulting lower sales figures and higher expenses for freight costs hindered the sales in this sector.

The motorcycle ABS market in Asia is fairly consolidated with less than 10 OEMs present in the market. Bosch, Continental and Nissin are among the market leaders, cumulatively accounting for more than 70% market share.

We expect many new entrants in the Indian motorcycle ABS market given high volumes and low cost requirements of domestic manufacturers.
