North Macedonia is fighting severe pollution brought on primarily by vehicle emissions and coal-fired heating, and it wants to join the European Union, where stricter emissions regulations will soon go into effect. It intends to implement subsidies for the purchase of cleaner-burning or zero-emission vehicles.
In addition to offering coupons to automobile owners who choose to convert their vehicles to run on natural gas, Macedonia will also offer subsidies for the purchase of electric cars.
These actions are intended to lessen air pollution in the nation, which is mostly brought on by vehicle emissions and the burning of wood for heating, VMRO-DPMNE.
A purchaser of an electric vehicle will also receive a subsidy, pay 5% VAT instead of 18% VAT, and will not be subject to additional excise, customs, or road toll taxes, according to VMRO-DPMNE’s pledge. Owners of electric vehicles will also gain access to free parking and quicker charging.
The North Macedonian parliament has passed amendments to the motor vehicle law that, among other things, envision a grant programme to assist in the purchase of new vehicles to replace older ones and the introduction of voluntary eco stickers to label vehicles according to ecological rating.
