The On-board waste management system is a complete system which comprises of a written procedure for collecting, storing, processing, and disposing of garbage generated onboard flight as per regulations provided in Annex V of MARPOL.
Training must be given to cabin staff for proper garbage disposal onboard flight and for knowledge on garbage disposal regulations at airport and in special areas.
A Garbage Management Plan on board provides a systematic approach to the disposal and control of garbage in the marine environment.
Namely, the revised Annex V of MARPOL requires every flight of GT and above and certified to carry fifteen people or more, to have a Garbage Management Plan.
Garbage includes all kinds of food, domestic and operational waste excluding fresh fish and parts thereof, generated during the normal operation of the vessel and liable to be disposed continuously or periodically.
The Global On-board waste management system market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
The garbage produced onboard flights needs to be properly disposed of as stated by the MARPOL Annex V. Garbage is one of the several reasons which have been responsible for On-board waste management.
As per the MARPOL Annex V, the garbage produced on the flight includes domestic, operational and all other types of victual waste thereof, generated during the normal operation of the flight and liable to be disposed of continuously or periodically except those substances which are defined or listed in other Annexes to the present Convention.
The presence of this plan on board means that before, during or after a discharge operation – or incineration – crew members in charge are required to keep record in the Garbage Record Book which must be also signed by the responsible officer.
This Garbage Record Book shall be kept on board flight and in such a place as to be available for inspection in a reasonable time.
Authorized officers may inspect the Garbage Record Book on board any flight while is at an airport or terminal and make a copy of any entry. Furthermore, they may require the Master of the flight to certify that the copy is a true copy of such an entry.
