INTRODUCTION TO OPHTHALMIC FEMTOSECOND LASER SYSTEMS MARKET

Over the past ten years, the femtosecond laser has been used in ophthalmic surgery, leading to the development of novel techniques. A femtosecond laser is an excellent tool for highly precise ocular surgery because its ultra-short infrared laser pulses may be delivered precisely and predictably with little collateral tissue damage.

The most popular application of this laser is for LASIK flap formation. Additionally, it can be used for cataract surgery, lamellar and full-thickness corneal transplants, and other corneal refractive treatments.

The femtosecond laser emits infrared light with an extremely brief pulse duration (1,053 nm) (10–15 s). The femtosecond laser can deliver laser energy with little collateral harm to the surrounding tissue because of its brief pulse duration.

The amount of thermal injury to nearby corneal tissue has been calculated to be on the order of 1 m. 1 Through a process called photo-disruption, which causes minute amounts of tissue to evaporate and give rise to cavitation gas (bubbles of carbon dioxide and water), this laser interacts with the tissue.

The Ophthalmic femtosecond laser system is also exceptional in that it may be directed anywhere inside or below the cornea and can partially pass through optically cloudy media, like an edematous cornea. The laser can be used to cut in a variety of geometric shapes, such as vertical, spiral, or zigzag cuts.

Early femtosecond laser systems required more energy to run since they had a low repetition rate (15 kHz). The new gadgets use less energy and can complete procedures faster because of their higher repetition rates (up to 150 Khz).

The devices also differ in terms of pre-programmed and programmable geometric cut patterns. Each laser system has unique qualities that have made it attractive for usage in particular operations.

OPHTHALMIC FEMTOSECOND LASER SYSTEMS MARKET NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

Fluence has introduced the Ophthalmic femtosecond laser system which is Jasper Flex Femto laser, which has applications in several fields, including ophthalmology, and is intended to offer “exceptional reliability and an excellent lifespan” in comparison to previous lasers.

The Jasper Flex is more resilient and versatile than other free-space systems since it can work at a variety of temperatures, doesn’t require routine maintenance like more conventional laser devices, and can withstand more vibration and movement.

Fluence, a Warsaw-based laser maker, claimed its new device, which has a 30W power output, falls between its smaller, less potent Halite laser and its larger 60W Jasper X0 model.
