A steel padfoot roller, also known as a sheepsfoot roller or tamping foot roller, is a type of road roller compactor. The rollers pad breaks up and compacts the soil before construction or road work.
Pad foot, tamping foot, sheepsfoot rollers and other vibratory rollers are typically used for compacting clay and other fine-grained soils. The textured bumps on the roller assist with compacting silty clays, allowing the padfoot roller to move over the surface without lifting sticky mud or clay off on to the roller drum.
These single drum rollers use a combination of weight, vibration and shearing motions to compact heavy soils. The vibrating force of a vibratory roller like a padfoot roller delivers optimal compaction capacity.
A padfoot roller is best for working with cohesive (sticky) and high water content materials like clay and mud. They can be used in applications such as preparing subgrade soils for pavement, constructing new roads, compacting soil in dams and tailings ponds, compacting embankments, backfilling trenches and other heavy compaction jobs that involve silts and clays.
Padfoot rollers work by vibrating coarse particles such as gravel into the ground. The soil or gravel particles respond to the vibration by rearranging naturally in size order, making them sit more neatly as the particles fit closely together.
The Global Padfoot roller Market accounted for $XX Billion in 2022 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2023 to 2030.
CASE introduces two new vibratory rollers to its E-Series – CASE Construction Equipment introduces the SV215E and SV217E single-drum vibratory rollers. These new models are built with the intention of offering fast and consistent soil compaction for varying lift ranges and material types.
According to the company, it was able to achieve this speed and consistency by engineering high centrifugal forces, standard dual amplitude and dual frequency capabilities.
Both rollers operate at 154 horsepower and weigh 33,420 and 36,500 pounds, with centrifugal forces up to 73,063 and 74,861 pounds. Also, each model is compatible with ACEforce intelligent compaction technology, which measures the absolute value of the bearing capacity of the compacted material.
