This simple photo transistor light sensor can detect ambient light. Similar to an LED, it causes current to flow from the long pin to the short pin when light hits the tiny chip inside. Because it has an optical filter built in (probably an IR filter), this sensor will be able to fairly accurately mimic light levels as seen by the human eye.
Simply connect the long + pin to somewhere around 3-15VDC and the short – pin to ground via a series resistor of about 1K-10K.The analog voltage is close to ground when it is dark, and there is almost no current flowing through the sensor or resistor.
The voltage will rise as a result of an increase in the current flowing through the resistor when there is light near the sensor. A microcontroller can be used to measure the analog voltage and adjust the series resistor to the desired voltage range.
