A Pitot tube is a tool used to gauge the flow of fluid in ducts and pipes. It consists of a tube with two apertures, one perpendicular to the flow of fluid and the other facing directly into it. The fluid’s velocity is calculated from the pressure differential between these two apertures.
A Pitot tube is put into a pipe or duct where fluid is moving in order to use it as a flow metre. A differential pressure gauge or other similar instrument is used to measure the pressure difference between the two mouths of the tube.
Based on the observed pressure differential, the fluid’s velocity can be determined by applying the Bernoulli equation. The fluid’s flow rate can then be calculated from this velocity.
