An incremental encoder called a quadrature encoder, which has two out-of-phase output channels, is utilized in many basic automation applications where it is necessary to sense the direction of movement.
The direction of motion is determined by the phase connection between each channel’s number of evenly spaced pulses per revolution (PPR), with one channel either leading or following the other channel.
In a quadrature encoder, the two tracks on the code disc are typically referred to as Channel A and Channel B. The main design component that will give the quadrature encoder its functionality is that these tracks or channels are encoded at a ninety electrical degree out-of-phase angle.
A controller can determine the direction of movement in applications where direction sensing is necessary based on the phase connection between Channels A and B.
