    While in open loop mode, seawater is led back into the ocean after passing through the scrubber only once. The open loop method is frequently employed since it has a low operating cost and occupies little space on board because no supporting equipment for water treatment are needed.

     

    Additionally, boundary conditions and a chemical model are put into place for the nozzles that inject seawater into the scrubber. The model framework is calibrated using data from an ocean-going vessel, where the model’s predictions were within 3% of the actual pressure loss while accounting for temperature differences between gas and liquid. The model predicts a range in sulphur concentration. With the exception of one data set, the concentrations were all within 5 ppm of the measured values.
