INTRODUCTION
Roll-on/roll-off ships are cargo vessels designed to transport wheeled freight that is driven on and off the vessel using a platform vehicle, such as a self-propelled modular transporter, or on its own wheels, including automobiles, motorbikes, trucks, buses, trailers, and railroad waggons.
Roll on, or RoRo A unique kind of vessel known as a roll off ship is employed to transport automobiles. These ships, which are often referred to as car carriers, have specific inclines (ramps) built to make it simpler and more convenient to load and unload automobiles and goods.
RoRo vessels have a lot of benefits over conventional ships, with flexibility, operational speed, and time savings being the three key ones.

RECENT DEVELOPMENT
In order to give Majuli Island the critical connectivity it needs, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will launch a new Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) facility in partnership with the Government of Assam. A new Ro-Ro service will be inaugurated by the Assam Chief Minister.
With the utilisation of a river channel, this Ro-Ro facility will reduce the convoluted 423 KM route that vehicles traverse from Neamati to Majuli Island through the Tezpur Road Bridge to just 12.7 KM.
The new vessel, MV Bhupen Hazarika, has been purchased by IWAI for the new service, and it is also providing the required terminal infrastructure. Eight vehicles and 100 passengers may be transported aboard the 13.3 metre wide, 46.5 metre long ship.
One of the largest riverine islands in the world, Majuli is situated on the Brahmaputra River and has significant connection issues. It has around 1,50,000 people living in 144 communities.
The start of Ro-Ro services to Majuli island would be a significant development for improving connectivity throughout the North Eastern region, not only in Assam.
There are just four road bridges over the Brahmaputra currently, located in the southern and northern areas of Assam in Jogighopa, Guwahati, Tezpur, and Sadiya. For their daily necessities, residents on either side of the river must use the traditional ferry service at various sites.
